Wednesday, May 10th- We are finishing up our memoirs in reading. Today, we began drafting our memoirs. (beginning-setting)
Wednesday, May 2nd- Period 1: read and annotate for day 4. Choose two things from the book to annotate. Period 6: read and annotate for day 5- choose two things to annotate. *remember to explain why you picked these two examples.
Tuesday, May 1st- First Period- Read and annotate for day 3: choose 2 important parts of your memoir to share. Period 6- read and annotate for day 4: record physical and personality traits for your main character. Then compare yourself to the main character. (How are you alike/different?)
Friday, April 27th- Remember to bring in your family photo for Monday's writing assignment. Annotations and reading are due too. Period 1- day 1/ Period 6- day 2.
Thursday, April 26th- Today, we had our final visit with our 3rd grade buddies from North Chicago. It was a fun-filled morning!
Please send in a family photo by Monday, April 30th. We will be writing a story based off of the picture. Periods 6 & 7 needs to finish reading their memoir book and annotations from day 1. This includes jotting down notes about the setting and include one memoir element to write about. (reflection, lesson, dialogue, mood, tone, and events) Include why you choose this excerpt too. This should all be written in your reader's notebooks.

Tuesday, April 24th- Today we took a quiz on Knucklehead. We reviewed for the figurative language quiz, and we began to think about being storytellers. *Figurative Language quiz is tomorrow- hyperbole, personification, and oxymoron
Monday, April 23rd- finish annotations from Knucklehead, chapters 26-END. Quiz on memoir tomorrow. Figurative Language quiz on Wednesday-hyperbole, personification, and oxymoron. *Period 6- Book Fair is tomorrow (bring money)
Thursday, April 19th- Today we continued to discuss the features of memoir. We annotated chapters 13-19, and we read and discussed mentor texts on memoir. For homework- finish annotations and read chapters 20-25.
Wednesday, April 18th- Today we discussed the different components of memoir: events, reflection, lessons, dialogue, etc. Then we annotated chapters 6-12 with a partner. We also discussed other types of figurative language: personification, oxymoron, and hyperbole. There will be a figurative language quiz next Wednesday, April 24th. For homework, please finish your annotations from chapters 6-12 and read chapters 7-13 in Knucklehead.
Monday, April 16th- Today, many students read their poems and shared their analyses. The new unit of study, memoir, was introduced. Tonight, read chapters 1-3 in Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka.
Tuesday, April 10th- Today, we started PARCC testing. We took two tests: ELA and Math. Please remember to prepare for our poetry reading/analysis on Friday. See rubric.
Friday, April 6th- Today we selected our poems for our projects. Students will be presenting them to the class on Friday, April 13th (see rubric). *Seesaw will not be used. We began practicing for PARCC, and we will look at another test on Monday. Please have a pair of headphones and a charged iPad for Tuesday.
Wednesday, April 4th- Today we continued to study poetry. We discussed rhyme, rhyme scheme, structure, and metaphors. The poetry project was introduced, and I provided a rubric to explain what will be assessed. An example of what is expected will be shown on Friday.
Tuesday, April 3rd- Today we read a poem called "A Day" written by Emily Dickinson. We analyzed the poem together and defined some challenging words. Next, the kids were able to read other poems by various poets. By the end of the week, each child should have one poem to read and analyze for Seesaw. (Project sheet will be going home tomorrow.)
Another also wrote our own class poem called "I Made a Mistake," and we discussed metaphors and similes. Students were reminded that they need to identify the figurative language and understand it's meaning.
Homework: finish writing to your third grade buddy- due tomorrow
Monday, April 2nd- Today we wrote about our spring breaks in our writer's notebooks. Then we began our study of poetry. We read several poems and understood their meaning, and we looked for poetic devices. More poems to come :)
Friday, March 23rd- Have a wonderful spring break! Try to read a book if you have some extra time :) *If your biography project is not complete, please finish it over the break. Don't forget to share your idiom and biography tests!
Thursday, March 22nd- Biography project is due tomorrow. Remember to include an author's note and an about the author page.
Wednesday, March 21st- The Seesaw project is due tomorrow- record a video of yourself pretending to be your biography subject. Remember to include the guidelines from the rubric. (birth date, family, etc) Tomorrow will be our last day to work on the biography project. Remember to write it for a 3rd or 4th grader and include pictures that fit the story and that are engaging. *Find a book to read over the break too! Tuesday, March 20th- Friendly reminders: idiom quiz is tomorrow- know the meaning of the five idioms. Also, the 9th independent reading book is due tomorrow. Remember to record your Seesaw presentation by Thursday. (See guideline sheet) Finally, the biography stories are due on Friday. Continue to work hard this week! You can do it!!!
Friday, March 16th- Today we worked on our biography projects and took a test. A few reminders about our writing projects: remember to tell a story and weave in a theme. Most of our subjects were determined to become better athletes, leaders, teachers, etc... Try to explain their story by emphasizing their goal in life. Don't forget that your Seesaw presentation is due next Thursday! Practice using those 5 idioms for Wednesday's test. Enjoy your weekend!
Wednesday, March 14th- Today, the students selected a structure for their biography project: biographical sketch or a collection of stories. Then some students began to map/draft their stories on a story map. They will continue to draft this week. Next week, they will use book creator to finalize their project. Continue to study for the figurative language quiz, and finish typing your similarity paragraph.
Tuesday, March 13th- Today was a busy day! The Seesaw project rubric was passed out - please see the requirements that are written out on the rubric. We discussed 5 idioms for our figurative language study- expect a quiz next Wednesday. Finish typing your introduction to your compare and contrast essay in a google doc. We will continue to type more tomorrow. Continue to read more about your biography subject. Tomorrow you will be given the project guidelines to create your iBook.
